Flashlight and Portable Power Source
I am all about convenience, if there is a device that makes my life easier I probably own it. That was my thinking when I purchased a shake flashlight about a year ago. A few things that I didn’t like about the shake light was that the light output was poor and a charge would not last very long.
I was excited when my Pull-to-Charge LED Forever Flashlight came in the mail for review. This is one versatile flashlight! It’s a good size, so it feels right in your hand. The head swivels, so when you are working in an awkward location the beam will always shine where you want it. The light is produced using five bright white LEDs. Nice thing about LEDs is that they don’t need to be replaced like normal incandescent bulbs. The charging mechanism is convenient, there is a simple pull cord that is located on the base of the unit. Just give it a few yanks and it charges the battery. There is also a car charger that is included with the flashlight.
This device can also be used to charge other devices such as cell phones. It comes with a variety of adapters that should fit most phones. I thought that it wouldn’t work on my phone at first since the charging port on my phone was smaller than any of the adapters that came with the flashlight. Well to my surprise there is another port on the bottom of my phone (under a rubber seal) and one of the attachments fit perfectly into it. As soon as it was plugged in the phone began to charge! I metered the output of the device and it was a solid 5 Volts DC, I am assuming that there must be a regulator built into the device since the voltage stayed constant regardless of how charged the battery was.
Where would I use this device?
* In the kitchen drawer for emergencies.
* In the glove box of the car for emergencies and charging my cell phone.
* Fishing tackle box.
* By the back door for those midnight trips to the garage.

[...] Here’s how to make a USB charging flashlight. But you can probably make this work for many other devices that run 5V including MP3 players, cellphones, whatever it is. Just don’t complain if you try to power something less than 5V and blow it up… After reviewing the Forever Flashlight for The Gadget Panel I couldn’t help but take its capabilities to the next level. I wanted a portable USB charger that could recharge things like my iPod Shuffle. I know there are lots of battery powered options, but I wanted something that didn’t need battery replacement. USB power is 5 Volts and that is exactly what this flashlight puts out on the auxiliary power plug so there is no voltage level conversion required. I also like the fact that this flashlight has Ni-MH batteries inside, not just some big capacitors like some other units. [...]
